Lemon Delicious

Every day, Southern Cross Care (WA) (SCC (WA)) employees make an extraordinary difference in the lives of the people we support. But what does it mean to make an extraordinary difference? It’s not about grand gestures or big acts; sometimes, it’s the simple things that have the most profound impact. It’s about taking the time to connect with the people we care about.

Recently, we sat down with the remarkable team at Jeremiah Donovan House to learn about the extraordinary moments they’ve been creating for their residents.

“Moving into aged care can be a big change in life, and it comes with its challenges,” said Facility Manager, Lorraine Wallis.

“That’s why it’s so important to connect with our residents and understand their needs,” she said.

Therapy Assistant Swamini Dandekar shared a heartwarming story about resident Edna Boyle, highlighting the team’s commitment to creating personalised moments.

“One day, Edna gave us her old recipe book, sharing her favourite recipe, Lemon Delicious. Because she was having a bit of a low day, feeling a little homesick and sad, we decided to surprise her by cooking it. When we presented her with the dish, she was so happy. She called us her angels and said how special we had made her feel,” Swamini said.

Swamini believes in the importance of going beyond her role to bring joy and companionship to residents.

“It’s important to go the extra mile and make residents happy. We ask them what they want, spend time with them, and truly get to know them. By getting to know our residents and understanding their needs, we can create happy moments for them.”

Reflecting on the impact of the team’s effort, Edna said, “They had Lemon Delicious on the menu, but it wasn’t what I expected. I mentioned it to Lorraine, who encouraged me to bring down the recipe. Swamini and Maria, the Occupational Therapist, took my book and cooked Lemon Delicious for me. It was a time when I was feeling a little crook, and that little gesture of cooking Lemon Delicious really brightened my day.”

“Both my husband and I have been living here since February, and we come from the country. Let me tell you, this place is an absolute palace. Here, we’re treated like human beings. If I ever have any concerns or complaints, I can go straight to Lorraine, and she sorts it out.”

At SCC (WA), we are proud of our exceptional employees who consistently make a difference in the lives of the people we care about. In these moments, a compassionate and supportive environment is created, where residents feel valued, seen and heard. Their dedication, kindness, and commitment to creating extraordinary moments for residents and clients truly embody the values of our organisation.
