Supporting carers through respite

Being a full-time carer for a loved one can be challenging, so respite care is important to allow carers to take a break or time away from their usual care responsibilities to look after their health and wellbeing.

Carers often find themselves saying no to social events, not getting enough exercise or losing touch with their own sense of wellbeing because they are busy caring for a loved one.

Having access to respite care not only gives carers the chance to attend to everyday activities, work or take a short break but also provides numerous benefits for the person being cared for.

Southern Plus offers a range of flexible, day or short respite options, either in-home, at one of our respite centres, or short-term respite in one of our residential care homes.

We have three locations dedicated to day/cottage respite: Tony Quinlan Respite Centre in Hilton, Donovan House Respite Centre in Forrestfield, and Bran Nue Dae in Broome. Each is purpose-built to ensure individuals feel comfortable and at home during their stay.

Hear from our clients

Cheryl, whose mother Lola regularly attends Tony Quinlan Respite Centre, says respite care gives her time to prioritise her own health and wellbeing whilst she continues caring for her mum.

It’s hard when you’re looking after someone 24/7, you don’t always get time to look after yourself. Having her in the centre gives me time to get done what I need to do for both me and mum.
