Respite funding for people living with dementia and their carers

The Commonwealth Government has awarded $8 million in new grants to further expand innovative respite support programs for people living with dementia and their carers.

Southern Cross Care (WA) (SCC (WA)) is proud to be one of eight recipients of these grants nationally, awarded through the government’s Improving Respite Care for People Living with Dementia and Their Carers initiative. SCC (WA) will receive $784,000 over three years.

“We are grateful to the Commonwealth Government for this funding, which will enable us to expand our respite services to provide much-needed support to people living with dementia and their carers in our community” SCC (WA) CEO Clare Grieveson said.

“Carers play a huge role in supporting people to continue living in their homes for as long as possible but being a full-time carer can be all-encompassing. Respite is vital, allowing carers to take a break or time away from their usual care responsibilities to look after their health and wellbeing.

“This investment will enable us to introduce a new program inviting people living with dementia and their carers to experience the positive impact of respite first-hand and engage in education sessions designed to empower carers with improved skills and confidence.

“By providing education and regular opportunities for respite, we can ensure that carers are better equipped to manage their vital roles, while those living with dementia benefit from enriched social interactions and activities.

“I thank Minister Wells for her commitment to delivering more dementia respite support programs to help older Australians and their carers.”
