Extraordinary care, wherever you call home

At 95, William is determined to continue living in his own home until he is 100, and with the support of SCCWA, he’s on his way to doing just that.

“I’ve been a home care client with Southern Cross Care for a year and three months. I’ve found it wonderful,” he said. “Someone comes and takes me shopping once a week, that’s been very good. I get three showers a week, which is very helpful because I’m always frightened of falling in the shower. And I’ve got a cleaner once a fortnight.”

William is one of more than 1,800 Western Australians who choose SCCWA’s home care services to support them in living independently, safely and comfortably at home as they age.

Our home care provides flexible, tailored support, from personal care and help around the house to transport, meal preparation, or simply having someone to chat with over a cuppa. We work closely with clients to get to know the people we support and to understand the little things that matter the most to them.

William has a large, loving family, but with everyone leading busy lives, home care has helped him feel supported between visits.

“I’ve got a lovely family, four boys and a daughter. They all come when they can, but they’re not always available,” he said. “My wife died five years ago, and it’s a very lonely life when you’re on your own. So just having someone come in and help you is a blessing.”

He’s also formed close bonds with his support workers.

“I had a girl come on Wednesdays and Fridays for a year, and we were just like brother and sister. These people become really special to you because you see them often.”
