Southern Cross Care WA celebrated International Nurses Day at 10 locations across Western Australia, recognising nurses for their dedication, compassion, and care.
The people who work with nurses and residents in their care came together to express their appreciation with colourful crepe flowers and heartfelt messages of thanks.
This year’s theme, ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.’ highlights the important role empowered nurses have in improving health.
“Empowered nurses absolutely save lives — not only in emergencies, but through the quiet, consistent, skilled care they provide every day. Through early recognition of care needs. Through preventing harm. Through supporting families. Through ensuring dignity at every stage of life,” said Sandra Waters, Chief Operating Officer of Clinical and Residential at Southern Cross Care WA.
Many nurses spoke about the importance of listening and providing high quality care with a steady, non-judgmental presence. They explained how these qualities make a difference to a person’s wellbeing and that nursing is not only about treating physical symptoms but understanding the whole person.
“Nursing in aged care goes beyond clinical care and treatment. It’s about being there for residents, offering emotional support, building trust and preserving dignity. We listen, advocate and create a compassionate environment where they feel valued and heard.” Registered Nurse Rada said.
When asked what nurses enjoy most about aged care, many highlighted the opportunity to build deep relationships with the people they care for, helping people in their most vulnerable moments, and providing comfort that improves lives.
International Nurses Day highlighted the extraordinary contribution nurses bring to the lives of families and residents at Southern Cross Care WA.
