Community Visitors Scheme

The Community Visitors Scheme is a Commonwealth Government initiative established to provide one on one contact between people living in an aged care facility and a volunteer visitor from the community in order to alleviate social isolation and improve quality of life for the resident.

Our aim at Southern Cross Care is to provide residents with company on a regular basis with the same visitor, and to make the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) a pleasant and rewarding experience for our volunteers. As a Visitor under the CVS you will make a world of difference to the well being of the resident that you visit.

A Community Visitor is a special volunteer who provides friendship and companionship on a regular basis to a resident of an aged care facility at least once per fortnight. A Community Visitor shares time in a variety of ways with the resident depending on interests and abilities, and these may include hobbies, listening to music, puzzles, reading, craft, chatting etc. There is no care work involved, just being a friend and companion is important and you can make a significant difference to someone who otherwise may feel lonely, isolated or who desires contact with someone from the community.
