Community Options Initiative

June 15 2009

Southern Cross Care are embarking on a new partnership with the Mental Health Department of Western Australia.

This exciting venture will see Southern Cross Care manage three brand new small community homes eventually accommodating up to 22 people. This move will  enable people  with persistent and serious mental illness to move from Graylands Hospital and to live in and experience a more homelike environment.

The first home at Mt Claremont will accommodate seven people is due to open shortly. The 7 potential residents have begun to spend long periods of each day in their new home.

The initial reaction by the new residents has been amazing. Each day they seem to grow more confident as they  are involved in the preparation of their own meals, and have begun to expand their community involvement, visiting other community centers with the help of both Southern Cross Care staff and a special team supporting their transition from Graylands Hospital.

The house accommodates both male and female residents and will be staffed 24 hours per day. The staff are enthusiastically settling into their new roles as they try to empower residents and re-develop lost skills.

The second newly built Community Options house in Stirling is almost completed . Residents have been chosen and are looking forward to moving from Graylands in the near future.
