Turning of the Sod - Currambine

November 14 2008

Thursday 6 November 2008 marked an exciting day for Southern Cross Care as the first sod was turned at the new independent living development in Currambine which has recently been named Sunlander Village.

Several SCC Board members and external stakeholders attended the informal function as the Mayor of Joondalup, Troy Pickard, turned the first sod with a shovel presented to Southern Cross Care by development partner Aspen Developments and builders Broad Construction.

Not even wet weather could dampen guests’ excitement for the new project which will see construction of a 234 unit independent living village consisting of architecturally designed two and three bedroom villas, terraced villas and apartments, all with two bathrooms.

Located on the corner of Sunlander Drive and Mistral Meander just off Burns Beach Road, Sunlander Village is only minutes from the beach, Currambine train station and Joondalup Health Campus as well as the Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre.

Sunlander Village will include amenities to encourage communal activities such as a large community centre, indoor pool/spa, workshop, bowling green, gym, hairdressing studio and library/computer room with internet access.

Stage 1 is due for completion in late 2009.  If you would like more information about Sunlander Village call 1300 749 188 or visit the website www.sunlandervillage.com.au

Funding for Mental Health Supported Accommodation

October 20 2008

Southern Cross Care (WA) is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the Mental Health Division of the WA Department of Health as the preferred provider for the Mental Health Supported Accommodation: Community Options Program for an initial period of 3 years. The program will involve the management of three small community residential units providing homes for a total of 22 people with severe and persistent mental illness who have spent long periods of time in Graylands Hospital. The units will be based in Bentley, Osborne Park and Mt Claremont. The properties associated with the program are under construction by the Department of Housing and Works and will be leased to SCC at peppercorn rates. Lotterywest will fund the fit out of all three homes. The first of the homes will be ready to open in early 2009, the second about six weeks later and the last towards the end of 2009. “This is an important milestone for SCC” said CEO Stuart Flynn, “and will enhance our already developing reputation as a successful provider of services to people with mental illness”. Former President of the AMA in Western Australia and Southern Cross Board member, Dr Paul Skerritt, has kindly agreed to convene and chair an Advisory Committee to oversee the establishment and operation of the program.

A first for Southern Cross

April 15 2008

The Department of Housing and Works has announced that Southern Cross Care (WA) (SCC), through its subsidiary company SCCWA Limited, is the first organisation to be registered as a Growth Provider of Community Housing in Western Australia.

This registration will enable SCC to work with the Department to provide high quality, affordable housing to older Western Australians of limited means.

Meeting the accommodation needs of poorer, older people is what led to the establishment of SCC in 1966 and this latest development will ensure that the tradition continues.
