Retirement Villages - Exercise for Fun
January 02 2009
On August 15th 2008 SCC village staff co-ordinated the first inter-village Ladies’ Day at Donovan Village in Forrestfield. The day was extremely well attended with 32 ladies coming from eight SCC metropolitan villages.
A large number of leisure pursuits were organised such as Scrabble, jigsaws, Nintendo Wii, cards, carpet bowls, craft, darts, Mahjong, pool and light gym work-outs.
Shelley Konig, SCC’s Village Services support said ‘the aim of the events is to provide a friendly, social event for our residents and run the outings on the third Friday of each month to offer activities in a relaxed and informal fashion. It offers our residents the opportunity to make new friends and see the other services offered within SCC. As this event is the first of its’ kind, we will be able to find out what lifestyle activities are the most popular so we can improve on each event’.
Word has since got out of the days’ success as ever increasing numbers of ladies attended the September and October Ladies’ Days with 65 and 72 ladies attending respectively. Residents told Shelley it was a friendly, happy social event and a chance to mix with the ladies from other villages. We enjoyed seeing all the different types of activities that we could do in our Village. Bus transport was provided free of charge by Southern Cross Care.
SCC’s first Men’s Day was subsequently held at Foley Village and drew a similarly large crowd of 45 interested menfolk who enjoyed a carpet bowls game and are looking forward to the re-match. SCC’s Chief Manager of Independent Living Services said, the next step is to see where we could involve residents in our residential and/or respite centres or if other non SCC villages would be interested in participating in these events.
