Rivervale resident and Southern Cross Care dementia specialist Janet Farrell recently returned from a life-changing experience in India.

Her work mentoring and training workers in the dementia care sector overseas followed a request for training assistance from Alzheimer's disease and Related Disorders Support of India (ARDSI) in Calcutta.

Ms Farrell, who is currently the manager of high dependency and dementia services at Southern Cross Care, spent two weeks in India providing a practical, hands on training program for dementia care staff and family carers.

She said her experience in India was both inspiring and good for her career development. "There is a huge cultural difference in India in terms of social welfare systems, hospital systems and access to medical treatment; however, I believe that one individual can make a difference and provide opportunity for under privileged communities abroad."

I reemmber my first encounter with an ‘old-folks home’ I was about 12 or 13 and doing volunteer work as part of my girl scout work. I reemmber seeing outside each patients room a large poster with photos and words about the story of that person’s entire life. It wasn’t done for dementia reasons but so that others reemmbered this aging person as a whole person in a complete light. I reemmber, even at that age, being very touched as well as enlightened about this whole process of aging.
